I'm looking for work for the first time in two years -- need to settle some old debts and make sure that [livejournal.com profile] countgeiger can have what I wished him last Yule: some kind of attainable happiness, incarnated as a boat named Amelia.

Got a nibble. 8-)

It's only one bus ride away, too, and firmly in the 510. I'd rather not drive for general environmental responsibility reasons.

It's just the kind of stuff I'm looking for: mixed desktop/server, heterogenous network environment to keep me from getting bored, and not even a whisper of pager duty. Looking at the reqs, it'll pay a lot less than I'm used to, but will also have far, far, less stress.

While computer geekery will probably always be important to me, and I enjoy working in it, it's not my primary joy anymore, and I'm not going to let it eat my life like it did when I worked at Hotmail.

But these folks... they want a phone interview; I gave them two one-hour slots. We'll see what happens!

The guy with the position wrote me back, saying that he was looking for more entry-level people, and couldn't meet my salary requirements (I offered as low as $50k, 2/3 my maximum historical salary, and a laughable pittance compared to the one 1099-contracting gig I got of $90/hr, but whatever).

I asked what his requirements were, and his top figure was $45k, which wasn't too bad.

I wrote back with this, using the oft-ignored job-hunting tactic of 'honesty:' )
