Re: Nibble
Sep. 8th, 2004 02:19 pmThe guy with the position wrote me back, saying that he was looking for more entry-level people, and couldn't meet my salary requirements (I offered as low as $50k, 2/3 my maximum historical salary, and a laughable pittance compared to the one 1099-contracting gig I got of $90/hr, but whatever).
I asked what his requirements were, and his top figure was $45k, which wasn't too bad.
I wrote back with this, using the oft-ignored job-hunting tactic of "honesty:"

Well, that's not *far* below my minimum...
Seeing as I've been all but discarded from consideration by this
point, I'll get rid of the usual professional pretense and get straight
to the point:
As I'm quite active in my local religious community, I'm looking
for something that's below my usual qualifications in responsibility and
time committment. I would probably need to take some amount of time off
w/o pay to handle these committments, especially in my early months.
You, understanably, would not like this! However, I mean precisely what
I say, and this is not some sort of smokescreen for "Lorrie is a
tie-dyed Berkeley slacker who'll never be in the office."
On the flip side, you'd be getting the benefit of my experience
in the field for a very low price, which means that tasks would be
more swiftly and with better service than with the entry-level person
you're looking for. When I *am* at the office, I like nothing better
than a contentedly running network, and really don't care how much I'm
being paid to get it that way. My primary motivation for re-entering
the workforce is to aid my husband with relieving debts we incurred
during the dot-com boom, so even a take-home of about $2000/month, which
is what would happen with a salary of $40k, in the middle of your range,
would be a great help.
Those are the less noble, but more honest, reasons why this
would be an ideal job for me. If, after reading the above, you'd still
like to talk, I am still keenly interested in a phone interview.
Sincerely,
-- Lorrie

Date: 2004-09-08 03:16 pm (UTC)And salaries were historically CRAZY here during the boom. You can't take the salary you were making then as a good number, really.

Date: 2004-09-09 03:58 am (UTC)I went from working full time in a fairly technical job w/ benefits at something like $17+/hr to working less than 20 hours a week at a retail level job with no benefits at $10/hr.
I've gotten used to the idea that Starbucks could be a great place to work.
It reminds me of Pern somehow...
