Current Server Status:

Overall StatusExplanation
Cookie Monster The current status of my server is Cookie Monster: things are going well, but someone hogged all my bandwidth.

Someone in the Greater Columbus, OH area, using a RoadRunner cable modem is trying to get an archive of a site I host. However, they're being rude about it, ignoring the "please don't do that" sign that has been quietly erected. In response, I shut the web server down for five minutes and am researching bandwidth throttling solutions for my particular setup.

I'll post something that's not about the server soon, promise!

If you're not running Apache 2.x, and you're on 1.3.x, mod_throttle is your friend...

Otherwise mod_bw or mod_bandwidth might be the way to go.

Yeah. It's 1.3.x (Stupid Rassafrassin PHP..) and we're debating between mod_throttle and just doing kernel level QOS management with tc - what are your thoughts, Obi-JNA-Kenobi?

mod_throttle still works well, even though it hasn't been updated -- it's a simple module.

mod_bandwidth, maybe?

PHP 5 works under Apache 2. You're just scared to use it. :P

Use a module instead of kernel level hacks, I say.

Heh -- I wanted mod_throttle, but:

1) Check the page, not updated since 2000.
2) Also, the provided downloading link doesn't work--404!

mod_bandwidth for apache2 will do the trick.

http://www.ivn.cl/apache/

However, for a "final solution" iptables (for linux) or ipf/ipfw (for *BSD) is a much more satisfying resolution.

Personally, I'm waiting for mod_cluebat to be written, but then, I'm E-VIL ;-P

Alas, we're on Apache 1.3 because php still recommends it, as not all its third-party modules are thread-safe.

Else I'd skip 2.0 and go straight to 2.2. 8-)

-- Lorrie also wishes for mod_cluebat. ;)

Heck just go all iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -s [asshole's IP address] -j DENY on their ass.

That's not a dynamic approach, though. You have to sit and wait.

Eh, it's either a really really devoted slashgirl or someone else I'll particularly care about, I'm sure.

As one of my two only paying customers, I have to give them a lot of slack. 8-/
