Hello, everyone! Remember this?

Or even a map that looked something like...

Well, three years and a month later, let's do something... completely different.

It's a car, now, instead of a train, and I'm writing these entries at the halfway point instead of As It Happens. Two weeks instead of three, shoehorned between extant committments in order to incorporate another, but in a real way I'd not be on this one if I'd not been on the last one. It wound up an initiation, of sorts, but I'd had the brains to know that when I started, so that's all right.

The travels are around the Southwest of the US, encompassing portions of Westria, Elaya, the Barren Lands, and Aztlan.

Or, if you like, California (North and South), Arizona, Navajoland, and New Mexico.

A couple of months ago, Diana Paxson and I received an invitation from Bill Bainbridge. As some of you may know, Bill was Steersman of The Troth directly before Diana. This was all right, though, as they had known each other many years before that, and indeed 'twas Bill who'd introduced Diana to organized heathenry... but that's another tale, and not mine to tell.

Anyway, an old friend send us an invitation to come to SouthwestMoot, the first festival of that name to occur in some years. It was to be held on Beltane Walpurgisnacht weekend at a campsite near Albuquerque; wouild we come?

Diana and I discussed it. The plane fares were ridiculous: $350 round trip. Each!

"We can drive this! It'll be cheaper and more fun besides!" In my family, this would have been a self-evident statement. 1200 miles? Sure, and Dad might've been crazy/stupid enough to drive it all in one shot. Nowadays, though, I'm religiously obligated to a smidge o'wanderlust, and to enjoy the journey while I'm at it. Two days, I figured, each way. Leave the Wednesday before the moot, be back in time for the Tuesday after...

Diana was slowly convinced, but a couple days later, a Good Thing was made Even Better.

"Y'know," I said, "the plot of the current new Westria novel... it goes through that part of the country, doesn't it? We could Follow the Path of the Plot, takng a day or few to either side..."

"Hmm..." Diana said. Or maybe it was the other way 'round, that she'd suggested it... hardly matters, I suppose. An Idea had Been Hatched, and we were going to go through with it, dammit. Gods were duly consulted, supplies laid in, routes chosen... and we were off, with orders to enjoy ourselves, maintain a low profile, and not carry around that little bubble of quiet superiority that many spiritual folks and/or Bay Area People tend to walk around with. You know, that subtle aura of "I Am Hot Shit?" Yeah, it had to go.

Hammer Oak, another big local kindred, had a social thing a couple days before, attended by several of you. I couldn't keep myself from bouncing at random intervals, burbling "roadtriproadtriproadtrip" over and over, although I think I kept the outbursts relatively quiet, confined to my end of the table, and to no more than twice in mixed company. I think.

Hey, dammit, in my particular and obscure little faith, this is a sacrament.

On Monday afternoon, with all due work performed on my humble green Taurus, packed to the gills with stuff for hotelling and camping... we were off!

... unfortunately, that entry will have to wait until tomorrow. It's bedtime, and we're going into Santa Fe tomorrow for some shopping. G'night!

"For I must go where I am sent
A victim of self banishment
Orion has become my guide
And Venus is my willing bride
With Wanderlust my fuel and feed
I roam the world as 'tis decreed!

For the fever's upon me
And my captain is callin'
I cannot stay with thee,
M destiny's callin'.

I'll never be free but I'll do what I must -
A captive of my Wanderlust!"

I didn't catch you to wish you luck before you ladies left, though I've been thinking well of you both and wishing I could be a little stone on the dashboard, coming along for the ride.

Go n-éirí an bóthar leat!
(May the road rise with you!)

Buenos tardes, Lori!

Arizona is lovely this time of year. I get the sense that you'll be in the northern part of the state. Lots of mountains and trees. Still cool enough to be comfortable.

The desert Southwest is in its glory right now, too. You may want to put Tucson on your itinerary sometime.

Buen viaje, chica!
