Birfday Presents for Woozles!
Apr. 5th, 2004 09:44 amDLP's son
grendel_todd has three adorable children, two of whom are fraternal twins.
Their birthday is today, so yesterday several of us gave them presents. DLP and I made them a pair of Hogwarts scarves, although due to their young age we decided to make them out of cheaparse acrylic and at 3/4 scale, with their initials stitched into the end in tasteful runes.
Now, she and I are working on another pair, and are starting to have this stack of people who want them, all to get done between now and the new movie in late June! First is a pair of Gryffindors for the third grandchild and
countgeiger, Hufflepuff for
bearmum, Slytherin for
firehair28, something-or-other for
grendel_todd and Mrs. Grendel Todd, a Ravenclaw for
emberleo oh, and yeah, a pair of Ravenclaws for DLP and myself, dammit. We've standardised on a gauge, yarn colors, and yarn brand so it all stays equal across scarves, and it's got a little wool content so it doesn't feel scratchy around your neck and kinda sorta insulates a little.
Phew.
So, uh, anyone local want to help? I'll teach you to knit!

Date: 2004-04-05 10:56 am (UTC)Jumble of move later, I still don't know where the yarn is; several months later, I am halfway through scarf #2 of at least 8 and remain in hopes that during unpacking I'll find the missing stuff.
Good luck to you with the project; they're fun.
I can knit scarves and hats; haven't done socks or sweaters yet. They're on the agenda. I've picked up a copy of Kids' Knitting to talk me through it as a good alternative for any of the "idiots" or "dummies" titles.

Date: 2004-04-07 06:33 am (UTC)My fingers were hurting because of the way I had been maintaining tension on the yarn; I changed my grip today and it goes much better. 8-)
I usually spurn all the Idiots' and Dummies' Guides as being essentially demeaning. This one, though, I actually got because, well, when it comes to fiddling with yarn, I am an idiot.
Not so much of one now, though. 8-)

Date: 2004-04-07 06:52 am (UTC)The yarn we've been using is Plymouth Encore. It's a worsted weight blend, 75% acrylic/25% wool. You can find it in great quantity and variety at Yarn! on Santa Clara near Park in Alameda for $4.60 a skein, and it takes four skeins for a scarf (two of the metal, two of the color). We've been using True Gold (color 1014) for our gold metal color, and Hufflepuff is gold and black.
If you have trouble finding size 9 16" circular needles, Yarn! still had some as well as Knitting Basket up in Montclair (sorry, I only know places in 510!). Also, we've been stitching initials and/or seidh names on the end in tasteful runes of the appropriate metal.
Should visiting a local yarn store not be in the cards for whatever reason, there's an online store (http://www.patternworks.com/PWShopping/partsvyarn.asp?action=lookup&partno=976&subject=U40.L44&catpos=11) where you can get them for $5/skein. They have the Hufflepuff colors in stock, although they're calling the gold one Butternut... well, it looks like Kraft Macaroni & Cheese to me, so what do they know? ;) I'll be posting something more coherent on all of these within the next couple of days.
When you swatch for gauge, we're aiming for a tube that's between 7 and 8 inches in width and stripes that are about three and a half inches tall. Assuming you knit more like me and less like Diana, you should be able to forge forth with the pattern as written and be in good shape.
I saw your car outside last night, so I figured you were upstairs, but I didn't know if you were buggable, so I erred on the side of discretion.
See you soon -- maybe at S&B?

Date: 2004-04-07 06:54 am (UTC)Think of it this way: if you sorted yourself into Ravenclaw, you and Yer Sainted Mum would be confusing your scarves all the time. This way, there's no problem.
