Update 0300 PST 16 Jan 2004: Lorien's network is back on the air. Hooray! Total outage less than six hours. Server was up the entire time; this was wholly a network issue.
Previous post:
Currently, some unknown but large chunk of the Internet cannot currently reach my server, lorien.snugharbor.com (aka nerdalfheim.org, hrafnar.org, thetroth.org, magicalacts.org, ravenswing.com, masterapprentice.com, pantheacon.com, et al).
This is not my fault, but is rather a networking issue affecting lorien's colocation facility (Winterlink). It happened momentarily last night, and has come back again tonight, and as I can't get into the poor boy from any of my other shell accounts, I'm going to presume that all my users are currently h0sed. I'm just as hosed, naturally, but exponentially more pissed...
Grar!

Date: 2004-01-16 12:10 am (UTC)Anychance of putting off the upgrade until after PCon? we're less than 30 days away and people are all over the site.

Date: 2004-01-16 01:49 am (UTC)a) a second drive fails on the raid, meaning a loss of all data on it, which includes all websites I host
b) We're hax0red because of security updates I can't properly apply with the machine at its current software level?
Rather than:
I go in and move all the data safely to the new machine, hopefully taking no more than three hours to affect the data transfer, recable everything, and pat myself on the back?
Two days is a conservative maximum that implies a rough data transfer. Three to six hours, in the middle of the afternoon, is more likely. I'm really worried about that hard drive -- but the bottom line is that it'll happen when the new server is ready. If it's in the next couple weeks, I'll probably do it, but if it's within the week before P-con, I'll probably not do it, both 'cos you'd kill me and because I'll be insane enough myself by then!
