Harvey Milk Day: Meme and Counter-Meme!
Sep. 19th, 2008 06:21 pmThis is a CA (SF Bay Area, really) teapot tempest--if you don't live here, this may not be particularly relevant to you, but read on if you like:
The CA State Assembly has proposed a Harvey Milk Day, and there's a movement afoot to stop it based on a lot of very vigorous speculation about what that might entail.
So, of course, it made Snopes.
Now, I'd just like to point out that one could just as well use those contact data that are so thoughtfully provided to phone up our beloved Governator and voice support for a Harvey Milk Day.

Date: 2008-09-20 01:55 am (UTC)Of course one could. That's why such outraged emails are (supposed to) only go to those who agree with the ranter's point of view. Too bad for the ranters, that "private" emails are routinely forwarded to utgarders, eh?
As someone who has not been a resident of California since 1994, and has no compelling reason to return, the bill has no impact on me. But use your knowledge for good, eh? ;)

I don't know that he should necessarily get an official statewide day or anything--I just object to the idea that one ought to object because if you don't it'll mean Folsom Street Fair in every fourth grade classroom, or something equally preposterous.

Date: 2008-09-20 11:01 pm (UTC)Ok... so they want a day to celebrate a politician who was assasinated. Well, I'm definitely in favor of dead politicians, but I'm just a bastard like that.

Honestly, if there was a way of simply flipping a switch and turning an otherwise straight person gay at whatever point in their lives (which is clearly what these people are so afraid of), don't you think we evil activists would have done that already? To the very people bedeviling us out of plain and simple ignorance?
I need a Euroterrorist icon or something.

Date: 2008-09-20 04:31 pm (UTC)It's like they know they couldn't get anyone to give a damn if they told the truth about what the bill says. So they lie their faces off about what's going on... and yet that somehow doesn't raise any red flags in their minds about whether this is a good path? *sigh*
"Lord, what fools these mortals be!"
