I decided it would amuse me to buy one of those pre-inoculated mushroom logs, as well as give me another interesting networking metaphor to wave at people (my mycelial layer 1 network, let me show you it).

Besides, they had blue öyster mushrooms.

I can has cult nao?

*grin*

Well, the timing's decent, given that the keyboardist from Pink Floyd dropped dead on Sunday. :/

We have, I suspect, just barely escaped cultdom. Ours are blue but not oyster, and should be fruiting for the first time this fall.

The pictures show a very flattering shade of blue--I hope it comes out!

(also, y'know, mystical mycelial mats will be ftw in Sikrit Project)

Ooer! Once they're up and growing, can I get a culture from you? I'd love to try growing my own edible mushrooms -- and oyster mushrooms happen to be fantastic at detoxing petroleum-contaminated soil. (They break down the heavy hydrocarbons into simple nontoxic molecules. They are nifty.)

I'm sure if you treat those mushrooms nice they'll be worshipping you as a goddess in no time!

Alternately, I can keep it on my office desk and claim it's performance art depicting the treatment of the average IT employee.

Yay! Mushrooms!
I would like to begin growing our own mushrooms. At least the harder to find ones. In our region, there are a bunch of mushroom...errr...plants? LOL...And mushrooms are quite cheap around here because of that. Lots of good varieties. Have you heard of the "Mother Earth" brand mushrooms? They are about 40 minutes from our home. There are also some plants that are only 20 minutes from home. But I still would like the growing experience, in addition to supporting local business. I'd love to hear your progress, because I don't know much about it, other than the pre-inoculted logs, kept in specific type of location, dependent on mushroomy needs. LOL.
I'm fascinated with the entire mycology area of study, really.
There is a local group that does field trips looking for them (the mushroom on their homepage, from Stoney Creek, is actually my home town, [errr, the mountain that proceeds up from my backyard, that is]...woot!). When I'm done school, and have a little more time (in theory), I think it would be very cool to join them.

Fun!

I'm in an apartment, and in a semi-arid clime--if it's to be in or near my house, it's got to be contained.

Besides, as a n00b, a pre-inoculated log is just my speed. 8-)

we had a shitake log once. It was disappointing because we were not successful in producing mushrooms. I hope your log is productive:)

I hope so too...it will, doubtless, help that the company is reasonably local and shipping by Priority Mail; I may well have this by EoW.

You sure you aren't channeling the ASM at my store? He wants everyone to yell crap like that when people buy mushrooms. Sorry to thread hijack; just venting over new mandates issued today.
