As I walked up Van Ness to Max's for lunch, I heard a crow giving an alarm call from across the street. I looked--two crows flew in to help the first, who appeared to be fending off a few seagulls.

The rumble went on for a few minutes, until I realized what the fuss was really all about--the crows were mobbing one of San Francisco's own peregrine falcons. I only worked that out when I noticed that the other bird wasn't moving; pigeons will scatter before crows, seagulls and corvids duke things out, but true raptors? HahahaNO.

The falcon, perched atop one of the gables of City Hall, was distinctly indifferent to the goings-on. She half-raised one wing when the crows were close enough to ruffle it, but was otherwise unmoved. After a few moments of watching everything from my spot in front of the Opera House, I kept on toward lunch.

On the also-bright side, lunch was a roasted artichoke and a spinach salad. Yum!

I worked across the street from Max's for a year or so, at the Public Utilities Commission. There used to be an Ethiopian place next to what's now the Asian museum that had the most kick-ass lunch buffet evar bar none kthx, but it closed. There is, however, Saigon Sandwich on the corner of Turk and Larkin, should you feel it possible to do Lunch in the 'Loin.

I remember Max's vaguely fondly. I loved the Golden Turtle further up on Van Ness, and I remember the weird vaguely-German bar-cum-dead-animal-house across the street from the Jack Tar (Cathedral Hill Hotel, whatever), Tommy's I think, with extreme affection.

I have seen murders of crows harass the FUCK out of hawks numerous times. Down in Santa Barbara it was quite common. The crows would chase the hawk around, divebombing it and carrying on. The hawk would shout "EAAAAAA EEEEEEEAAAAAAA EAAAAAAAAAAAA ERUUUP!" at them but it wouldn't stop 'em. Sometime there would also be mockingbirds divebombing the crows at the same time. Heh.
I've also observed a crow take off with an entire "Jack in the Box" bag, and a friend of mine watched a crow steal a man's toupee right off his head!
Ya know, that's a pretty sure sign that NOBODY is fooled by the toupee.

Last year we were witnessing a bunch of crows chasing off a red tailed hawk from their nest...goodness were they noisy. And aggressive! They chased that hawk all the way across our little town, toward the mountains that way (we live in a little valley of sorts). It was something else, to witness.

That sandwich sounds really, really good.
