Wasn't That Fun?
Jan. 4th, 2008 10:42 pmFirst things first:
lorien, which is what many of you know as "my mail!" and "my web server!" was down for several hours this afternoon due to today's highly exciting weather, wherein several inches of rain and hurricane-force winds wuthered with gusto and glee 'round my westward window--and quite knocked out the power.
After a couple hours of fever-fuddled thumb-fiddling fugue,
countgeiger and I nipped out with
dpaxson for Dinner and a Movie. Predictably, just before the picture was to start, and therefore too late to reasonably deal with it, I found out the power had been restored*, after which
lferion called, so she knew before anyone else.
It's back up now--please enjoy your regularly scheduled e-mail, websites, and assorted amusements! As a bonus, the past several months' kernel upgrades have all come to roost at once. This shouldn't break anything that's apparent to you, Gentle User, but should it, you know what to do.
In other news, apologies for not having been around lately: the day of Solstice,
countgeiger and I hopped Odin Airways to visit the in-laws. His father made me a lovely umbrella swift, I made his stepmother a lace shawl (only in this color). I am now the proud bearer of a dainty string of seawater pearls, and the husband of a straight-razor, of which, according to the gents who sold it us, they are doing land sale business.
All became clear to them when I pointed out that a movie which practically stars straight razors was, at that time, opening one day hence. The clerk was looking forward to said opening with great interest--it's nice to meet a man who enjoys his work.
The razor comes with a free shave, which is performed in the shop's front window, leaving no room whatever for disappearances via trap door. When
countgeiger goes in for his, I shall resist the urge to be watching, avidly, from across the corridor while munching some manner of hand-held meal.
On Boxing Day, there was a side trip to
countgeiger's odal ground, where we visited several of his posthumous friends and relations in their current long-term digs. We managed there and back again in a single day, but that pretty much killed any attempts we might have made to visit
thewronghands,
wodandis, et-any other-al, alas.
We did, however, manage to visit
auntiematter,
seasword, and
freydis at Gladsheim Kindred's hof. The hof loved us so much as to try and keep us, or at any rate the sinkhole out front attempted to swallow our rental car, but a whip-'round by a AAA tow truck prevented us from becoming a permanent fixture, and at least we were warm, dry, and fed while we waited.
We returned on 29 December, whereupon I was pressed into service for rituals on two days running, ran the kitchen for Greyhaven's New Year's Eve party, hosted my traditional Morning After the Night Before Party (in my nightie). I could tell when the stress of Holly Daze had finally passed, because then, and only then, did whatever vile germ that had been edging in on me during the entire trip finally make its move, and I was home sick from work three days because of it.
When you ain't got time to bleed...eventually, you'd better make the time or the time makes you. This, we learn from Granny Weatherwax. *nod*
Am now coherent. This is good; there's another fine ritual tomorrow. Wheeeeeee!
Be careful out there!

* -- I called my land line, and the answering machine picked up--and the ansaphone's not on the UPS for precisely this reason.

Date: 2008-01-06 10:39 am (UTC)We quite liked the movie! I want to see it again with some handheld pie in one hand--I'm thinking Chinese barbecue pork buns if nothing else. ;)

Date: 2008-01-06 02:58 pm (UTC)From what I can tell the "mana" is a biblical reference as it means 'spiritual power' in Hawaiian and pua is a shortening of "pua'a" as 'pua' means flower and pua'a means pig, in Hawaiian.
But yes that would be the perfect snack to eat while watching that movie. Kinda like bing cherries and 'Witches of Eastwick.' I knew someone who did that. ;)

Date: 2008-01-07 05:25 pm (UTC)Oh, and my throat sounds like I've been gargling with gravel today.
However, as I'm not contagious, I'm at work--if nothing else, it convinces all and sundry that I wasn't malingering and just taking a couple extra days off break... 8-)
