BIRFDAY!

My thirty-third birthday is on 3 October, and this year, I'm inviting all of you to come join me.

First Wave (30 September): Cake!
[livejournal.com profile] countgeiger tried to surprise me, but I got the best of him. Join me at my house starting at 5pm this Sunday for an ice cream cake from (nom nom nom) Fenton's. The concept of a party planned by hyperactive six-year-olds will be narrowly averted by three factors:
  • You and your potluck!

  • A big ol' tri-tip roast, which as such will feed most everyone, and will be served faintly mooing because it's my birthday and I can make fiats like this.

  • A vegetarian dish to be determined, compatible with the requirements of the known guest list, perhaps Okra and tomatoes?

Second Wave: We had cake, does that mean death here? No! Fish!
This one was my idea, and will be on my actual birthday, which is Wednesday, 3 October, from 7ish on. We'll be at Akasaka Sushi 2650 Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley. The Yelp folks have some information for you, and, from my own independent research in conjunction [livejournal.com profile] erynn999 and [livejournal.com profile] dpaxson, we can state that they're a middle-of-the-road place: the usual suspects of maguro, hamachi, sake, tai, unagi, et al are up to par, but I detected a slightly off note in the uni*.

They have an All-You-Can-Eat option: choose as many as three plates at a time from a limited menu, for about $20 per person. Now, you can expect some of the horsing around that would come from this: the fish slices are a little thin, the rice wads are mighty, and you can expect the rolls to have a thick layer of rice on them. But, hey, it's fresh, tasty, and cheap-for-sushi.

And, hey--they also have tempura and mochi ice creams, although these are not part of the AYCE menu.

Attend one--or both! Attending friends' birthday parties helps assure riches in the fashionable afterlife of your choice. It's also good luck to buy uni and sake for the birthday girls in your life. 'strewth!

To preserve some scintilla of surprise about Sunday, please RSVP for it with [livejournal.com profile] countgeiger. RSVP for Wednesday here with me.
* For the Hairy Barbarians:
In English, that's "bluefin, the really red tuna", "yellowtail tuna", "salmon", "red snapper", "freshwater eel", and the slightly-funky one is sea urchin 'nads. Vituð ér enn, eða hvat?

sake:
Now, see, here I mean booze. Not salmon. Not that I would turn down salmon, mind you.

Regretably I must pass- ignoring that the vegetarian option is forgiven due to the MIGHTY offer of TriTip, I don't think I can make it up this weekend.

One of my regrets on leaving the orchestra is that I am no longer required to attend events where they had free sushi from one of LA's best chefs. You see, being the only employee with a van, I was nominated to liberate the Boat of Sushi. (yes, they had a 6 foot wooden boat to hold the sushi in. Strong!)

You know, I marinate that tri-tip in the same cure I use for jerky, and it is, if I may be so bold, fuckin' awesome. Oh, and then, as a birthday is surely a ritual occasion, it's over lump mesquite charcoal.

And besides, if no vegetarian option, the supremely curvy [livejournal.com profile] purplevenus would pout. And while it's a pretty, pretty pout, 'tis a pout nonetheless. Hospitality dictates that Pouting is to be Avoided among Guests.

Lamentation and WOE!

A very happy birthday to you! I shall not be around for the festivities but hope that being an adult in hobbit years brings you many good things. *grin* And surely Exu things 3-3 is a good year too.

Hm, that's so--perhaps I should give some things away on Sunday, like some of my nearly-new festival T-shirts.

And surely Exu things 3-3 is a good year too.

Heh! Well, my headwash will be in it...

Coming of age (as a hobbit) is indeed an important celebration. Unfortunately, being many thousands of miles away I won't be able to be there, but have fun!
