Thanks to the efforts of Chairwoman [livejournal.com profile] pentaclemoon and Fantasy Guest of Honor [livejournal.com profile] dpaxson, Yrs Truly has been invited as a guest to this year's Baycon.

Programming didn't put me on the schedule, and didn't tell me about this until the schedule was off at the printers'. While you, I, and any veteran congoer all know that the Program is Not Written in Stone until the Con, and Really Not Even Then, it's still pretty firm clay off at the kiln. Granted, I could have idled about as a relative freeloader, but I'd rather pay my own way, and here I had license to do so on my own hook, as 'twere.

Thus did I write to Programming, with great lamentation:

"Why is this? For lo, I filled out your questionnaire and bathed and everything!"

And lo, Programming did reply:

"Er. Oops. Well, I've got you scheduled for 'anywhere [livejournal.com profile] dpaxson is', although not officially published that way. Um, just add anything you like."

"Really? I wouldn't be a screaming meteor of grotesque imposition?"

"Nope. Go for it."

"Isn't the program already at the printer?"

"We already have a fairly significant errata sheet, so adding a few more lines is no issue. :)"

Hearing some of what [livejournal.com profile] dpaxson, [livejournal.com profile] grendel_todd, and [livejournal.com profile] jon_decles are going though makes me wonder if it's not less an "errata sheet" and more an "errata booklet". But it is also so that the Glorious Floating ConCom have managed more with less in the past, so while discombobulation reigns just now, I've no doubt it will Somehow All Fall Together by the con, rather like watching a train wreck in reverse.

So. The head of Programming told me to roll my own program...

So I did.
Friday:
17:30 - Westria -- getting here from work will be an interesting logistical challenge, oh yes.
20:00 - Meet the Guests

Saturday:
11:30 - Every OS Sucks -- This panel had no women on it. That ain't right! Note to Self: Pack "got root?" t-shirt.
16:00 - Religion and Science: Mutually Exclusive? -- Count me on the "are not!" side. Quelle surprise.

Sunday:
14:30 - Geek of My Dreams -- What do geeks find attractive? Will we remember to mention hygeine? Fast poll: should I show up to this one in my corset? Discuss.

Monday:
13:00 - ITTS -- The Institute for Trans-Temporal Studies is the metaversal plot of sundry of Greyhaven's Elder Days. Field operatives may hail from anywhere, anywhen, anyverse. I shall be reporting on my recent field work in the land of Westria.

From everything [livejournal.com profile] demiurgent's told me about Baycon, a corset probably wouldn't help set you apart from the rest of the population. It might even obscure the point from sheer commonality's sake (that's sure how Arisia's felt last couple years, I know that much). Show up in something that helps you bring out your teh-h0t, and if that's the corset, great, and if it's not the corset, dude.

Yeah, "geek chick in corset" is a con cliche by now.

Heh, I came late to the corset party and hence only own a slate-blue sueded leather bodice.

On the other hand, I got it hell of *cheap* at the Scottish Festival in Long Beach, from the artisan's clearance rack, and it served me well at [livejournal.com profile] wedgex's brother's wedding, a decidedly non-geeky affair.

Made mine myself, so it really really fits properly. Three layers: the outer of black cotton brocade, the inner of nice soft muslin, and the middle of near-canvas duck cloth.

Oh, and the steel.

Was quite inexpensive that way. 8-)

I remember that adventure....

But you are right, it turned out just lovely.

Yeees, and it involved lots of flailing and drama but I got over it--and hey, even I like the result...

Y'know who made everyone turn round and take notice one night at Arisia this year?

A woman in a pale pink dress, tall white pumps, and a fifties bombshell haircut. She just glowed in the crowd. You could spot her from three floors up and not be able to look away.

I'm not suggesting rocking the Jayne Mansfield look specifically, but it's worth looking over modes of hot that typically don't show up at cons at all. The girl was attractive on her own, but no one would have looked twice at her if she'd gone goth loli with the other twentysomething girlgeeks.
