Well, that's roughly minus a zillion sysadmin points.
I find I must apologize to everyone who uses my server, snugharbor.com, for e-mail or web space. It will be at least the weekend before service is restored.
The server is still down. The Mad Scientists have requested and requred that I accompany them on their annual retreat to Asilomar, keeping me away from so much as a telephone line until some time Friday evening. There was an outside chance I might have gotten it all together today, except my boss called me into the office (5 hours, poof)--that's what really killed it.
dpaxson also had to visit
purplevenus for some preparations for her headwash and general fizzy gabbing, but had I had those three hours I would only have stayed up all night, not gotten it done, and made an ass of myself at the scientists' jamboree--career limiting move, that.
The data are all safe, but the server's hardware doesn't want to play nicely on the network. We're not sure why. So, what can be done in my absence is that
countgeiger will extract one of the drives holding all that precious, precious data, all the e-mail and websites and groovy cool things (there were two drives, mirror images, both of these are intact), and take it to work from whence he can extract the data and bring it back up here to dump to the replacement server.
Once I'm back, my first priority will be to get name service and e-mail back online, as the software driving them hasn't been much changed. Then the webserver, as there has been a major change (Apache 1.3 to 2.2), then any fiddly bits (masterapprentice.com is a big, big fiddlybit).
Please let me know if you intend to move somewhere else as a result of this--I can wholly recommend Raven Banner, for example, run by the inimitable
macraven. Anyway, please tell me if you're moving, it really is important.
Thanks.

Date: 2007-05-02 05:12 pm (UTC)i have a request for you off thread. i have just rec'd a renewal notice for the domain name amuh.org. please do not renew it.. at this time, a web site is simply NOT within my thoughts/plans/ability-to-cope-with, for the next 3+ years and i do not want you to waste the money... that might be useful elsewhere..
nothing to do with your server issues,, plenty to do with my ability to "cope". working on manual of practice, preparing to rewrite next session, dealing with divorce issues. and a bunch of other stuff... even concept of website is waaay tooo much!
thank you for the opportunity but for now, no thank you.

Date: 2007-05-03 08:23 am (UTC)It's okay if you don't use the domain immediately. However, if you don't sit on it by renewing, somebody else might take it and fill it with crap.
It's common practice to sit on the domain of your organizations proper name until you are prepared to use it. Unless the price of the domain registration is more than can be afforded, I would go ahead and re-register and simply not worry about making a website until you're actually ready.
