So, now that [livejournal.com profile] countgeiger is secure and happy in his well-paying job at an adult-friendly hosting company in the South Bay, we can once more contemplate hosting lorien at a real colocation facility.

This is Good. It means my bandwidth will be many Gigabites per second of Pure, Shiny Awesome.

We've even obtained a 1U Dell server. The last time I tried to build this beastie (codename: boondock, until it goes online, and is renamed lorien), it had paired 40GB drives, which I mirrored handily. This means that you only get 40GB of space, but if one of those hard drives goes tits-up, the other will Do the Right Thing--or, as I just put it:

"My jury is out on whether Jesus saves? But I know mirroring does."

We have now obtained a pair of summat larger drives, which will be jiggled similarly.

400GB each.

I loves my husband, yes I do...

As a coda, by the way, this means that at some point in the future there will be two downtimes: one, with little fuss, will be to transfer data from old-lorien to boondock and reincarnate it as lorien. The second will be summat longer and need more fussing, as it will involve changing IP addresses as we put lorien in the colo again; I'll warn y'all.

Nice! Congrats to him getting another job. Let me know what the new IP addresses will be, once you get them.

Having a colocated server is spiffy and fun. And you'll get spoiled. After seven years of having one, I'm not sure I could handle life without. Connectivity downtime? Throughput bottlenecks? Using someone else's mail service? Not having root on my webserver? What horrors I can barely imagine!

It had been colocated, and then we ran out of money with which to pay for the colo, so we brought lorien home.

Now [livejournal.com profile] countgeiger works for a colocation outfit, so stashing a server there is less of an expense, and more of a unique job benefit. 8-)

And I have run my mail server, MY way, for over a decade. Mine mine mine all mine, and then I let my friends have room here too, because anything that cool ought to be shared.
