No Muppets.

One of Lorien's hard drives has failed.

However, because I am reasonably clever, I had the hard drives inside Lorien set up so that they "mirror" each other: anything written to one hard drive is also written to at least one hard drive, so:

NO DATA HAS BEEN LOST

I have taken the bad drive completely offline, so lorien will behave normally as far as everyone who is not me is concerned. This involved some amount of downtime.

After a meeting I have to attend today, I will be working on lorien's replacement, a sexy little 1U Dell courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] countgeiger.

Those of you wondering, "Yes, but how did the concert go!?" will have to wait, I'm afraid, but my one-sentence review is:

I liked it. I wanted to madly, passionately love it, but I couldn't quite manage it.

The next replacement lorien is a slick 1U Dell, with a pair of SATA drives.

What it doesn't have, bless its heart, is an optical drive of any sort. No CD, no DVD, yay! Also, it needs a BIOS upgrade before it could theoretically boot from a USB-attached hard drive. Therefore, the only way to boot it to load an OS is a PXE boot which, Gentle Reader, means that another machine on the network runs servers that explain to this machine how to boot.

I did that a few weeks ago, and succeeded in loading Debian, and even remembered to flip the hd devices to sd devices, as SATA is handled as SCSI emulation in Linux--except that was, apparently, somehow wrong, as now it won't boot again. Next step is to PXE-boot again, flipping the sda back to hda, and seeing if that does something useful (bloody well better).

I'm not sure why it didn't come up properly on boot, but it's up now...

I'm a friend of [livejournal.com profile] vanatru's through here. Do you know what's going on? I really really really hope it was hacked, and that he's still alive. if you don't want to answer here, here's my personal email: doering at u.washington.edu

Any info you have I'd appreciate. :(

I have *no* idea, only that other sources, who would be closer to him than I, are telling me that his account's been hacked. I would say that a drink to his welfare, alive or dead, wouldn't suck, but I wouldn't assume his death or drink to it until word's available through more official sources--to do so can be ill luck.

A fellow on the Troth's members' list suggests the following:

Unfortunately, I don't know his full first and last name, but if it is true,
that plus google could turn up confirmation as soon as it's announced, which
might take a day or two. The pentagon has been posting fairly regular news
from the fronts at:

http://www.pentagon.gov/news/Jul2006/

And the official casualty list at:

http://www.defendamerica.mil/fallen/oef/oef-army.html

I'm truly sorry that I can't be more helpful in this troubling time.

OK...checked both, and there was a story posted today on the first link about someone killed yesterday, but no names were given. And I didn't recognize his name on the second link. Fingers crossed...

The Troth's Steersman spoke to him on the phone yesterday to clear this up--[livejournal.com profile] vanatru is ALIVE AND WELL, repeat ALIVE AND WELL.

Yaaaaay! I saw the news late last night as I was doing the keyboard faceplant. I'm by no means a violent person, but I'd like to string up whoever hacked his LJ.

Well, it's entirely possible that the guy who made the original LJ post was himself misinformed, and the "it was hacked!" accusation made after the fact. I try to save my real murderous intentions for when I know all the angles, you know? ;)

Still, I also sympathise with your position... if it were done with malice, then I would definitely concur that some sort of retribution would be in order.

Yeah good point...if it were his buddy who made the post, thinking [livejournal.com profile] vanatru bought the farm, then he's got to be feeling even worse than expected...double whammy on the guilt trip. :/
