Lorien Status
Jul. 15th, 2006 10:10 amNo Muppets.
One of Lorien's hard drives has failed.
However, because I am reasonably clever, I had the hard drives inside Lorien set up so that they "mirror" each other: anything written to one hard drive is also written to at least one hard drive, so:
I have taken the bad drive completely offline, so lorien will behave normally as far as everyone who is not me is concerned. This involved some amount of downtime.
After a meeting I have to attend today, I will be working on lorien's replacement, a sexy little 1U Dell courtesy of
countgeiger.
Those of you wondering, "Yes, but how did the concert go!?" will have to wait, I'm afraid, but my one-sentence review is:
I liked it. I wanted to madly, passionately love it, but I couldn't quite manage it.
The next replacement lorien is a slick 1U Dell, with a pair of SATA drives.
What it doesn't have, bless its heart, is an optical drive of any sort. No CD, no DVD, yay! Also, it needs a BIOS upgrade before it could theoretically boot from a USB-attached hard drive. Therefore, the only way to boot it to load an OS is a PXE boot which, Gentle Reader, means that another machine on the network runs servers that explain to this machine how to boot.
I did that a few weeks ago, and succeeded in loading Debian, and even remembered to flip the hd devices to sd devices, as SATA is handled as SCSI emulation in Linux--except that was, apparently, somehow wrong, as now it won't boot again. Next step is to PXE-boot again, flipping the sda back to hda, and seeing if that does something useful (bloody well better).
