NB, Gentle Readers, that this isn't actually an old post come back around, but rather a new post made by editing an old post with new data.

[Edited 14:30 to Add: Called our ISP. Someone has to pop 'round to the Central Office, physically check some deep network hoodoo (the DSLAM card), and replace if necessary. Next update will be in 24 hours or so.]

And now, courtesy of Geek and Proud's Homeland Security Advisory thingy, cute Muppety pictures, we have the current Lorien Report:

Overall StatusExplanation
Elmo The current status of my server is Elmo as the network is DOWN.
The overall status breaks down into three sub-parts: network ("can I get there from here?") hardware (physical computer components) and software (programs that put the hardware on the network). If we have an Elmo, Ernie, or Bert on any one of these, that means something is affecting the casual e-mail & web browsing experience, either a little (Bert), a lot (Ernie), or it's completely cocked up (Elmo).

Network StatusExplanation
Elmo We're having intermittent network failure right now. If we're down at the moment, that's an Elmo--but if we were up right now, waiting for it to fall over again, that would be an Ernie.
Hardware StatusExplanation
Oscar Oscar Everything is A-OK!
Software StatusExplanation
Oscar Oscar As far as I know, we're all good here.

Yes, it's down again. My displeasure may best be measured in archaic measures like furlongs per fortnight. Our ISP, Speakeasy, is currently Expressing Their Displeasure at Covad, their ILEC (another kind of service provider), who in turn is about to Express Their Displeasure at AT&T, né SBC, né Pacific*Bell, né AT&T, whose fault this has all been since, I dunno, pre-Judge Greene, perhaps pre-Alexander Graham Bell.

As of now, 1137 PST on 11 June 2006, lorien's network is currently DOWN, eta unknown.

Bleargh!

I've noticed that since the AT&T / SBC merger the phone system seems to be all cocked up in Indy. Wonder if it could be that.

Wow, I have no idea.

This is a likely physical wiring problem. It is very common for networks in the Berkely Hills area to have significant connectivity issues, due to the fact that the wiring infrastructure under the street is old and poorly done.

I've consulted for clients around that area in years prior, all of whom had regular problems, irregardless of ISP. If you are offering services to friends or clients, I would highly recommend colo-ing the server elsewhere.

It ran quite well for two years, and now, well, it's twice in two months, and we are Not Happy.

Over the next couple of days, I'm going to be investigating either a cheap local colo or a static IP via Comcast; whatever will get us a %)(*@# static IP with less crap.

email me if you're interested in a colo - a friend of mine owns an ISP in Palo Alto that has really inexpensive co-lo space. I may be able to help.

Include in your email the average bandwidth lorien uses, and what sort of chasis she's in (a 1u rackmount chasis would be ideal, space and costwise).

I don't know offhand what bandwidth lorien uses, as I keep those stats on the server, which isn't accessible due to network issues. 8-P

However, it looks like Comcast will give us a static IP and better bandwidth than Speakeasy for less money--dammit, I wanted to support The Little Guy, and was willing to pay a premium to do so, but I am not willing to accept two significant outages in three months to do so.

We debriefed at each other, swapped stories, and then I took Hilary home. Pretty uneventful, actually.

It's the rain that causes lots of these problems in that area, coupled with the high density of trees. Root problems and water seepage into old wiring conduits. Nasty during high rain seasons.

Of course, YMMV. Generally, the older the neighborhood, the worse connectivity problems are.

Thanks for the update. My theory is that the Law of Maximal Inconvenience is hitting at *me* because I'm not home and its, well, maximally inconvenient not to have email. *grin*

Well, fine, then, it's all your fault. 8-P
