And now, as not everyone who has web sites, e-mail, etc at Snug Harbor is necessarily a card-carrying geek, here's the current situation in nice, friendly terms, courtesy of Geek and Proud's Homeland Security Advisory thingy, which provided the pictures.

Overall StatusExplanation
Ernie The current status of my server is Ernie as the network is UP but could go down again at any time.
The overall status breaks down into three sub-parts: network ("can I get there from here?") hardware (physical computer components) and software (programs that put the hardware on the network). If we have an Elmo, Ernie, or Bert on any one of these, that means something is affecting the casual e-mail & web browsing experience, either a little (Bert), a lot (Ernie), or it's completely cocked up (Elmo).

Network StatusExplanation
Ernie We're having intermittent network failure right now. If we're down at the moment, that's an Elmo--but if we were up right now, waiting for it to fall over again, that would be an Ernie.
Hardware StatusExplanation
Oscar Oscar Everything is A-OK!
Software StatusExplanation
Cookie Monster Cookie Monster There is a minor problem with website statistic collection, which has no effect for the average or casual user. Also, security was just tightened, which means that although I made every effort to ensure that things people already do aren't affected, I might have screwed up. Doesn't justify an upgrade to Bert status, though.

The network is still going down twice a day. Lengthy interactions with Speakeasy, our ISP, have arguably dealt with noise on the line, but they admit this is one of those Heisenbug situations--damn thing is nearly impossible to track down.

As of now, 1515 PST on 20 Mar 2006, lorien's network is currently DOWN, eta: as soon as someone with a %*(& key can reboot the DSL modem, which may be as much as two hours.

On the off chance that this is caused by attempts to breach our network, lorien's security measures have been tightened--I just ran the Bastille hardening scripts, which among other things enables a software firewall.

The original post, as amended, is below:

Twice a day for the past three several days--once in the midmorning/afternoon, and once in the middle of the night--our home network connection dies. At the moment, the only fix is temporary, and requires that someone physically present themselves on-site to restart a key piece of equiment, the DSL modem bridge.

Bleargh!

Hee hee, is that just Nagios with Sesame Street characters?

Nope -- my own invention, patterned on the sillinesses of the HOmeland Security Terror Alert System, and the fine folks who parodied it with Muppets...

i was thinking you could get nagios set up and replace whatever their color coded alert gifs or whatnot with the muppets. Also its a pretty good free system.
