My esteemed and glorious father e-mailed me to let me know that he's changing ISP's (and, thus, e-mail addresses) from a telco DSL to his cable company.
He is now blablabla@cox.net, right?
He also closes all his e-mails with "In His Grip."
Yes, my friends, cox[.net] is firmly in [the JCI] God's Grip.
Won't you all sleep a little better knowing that?

Date: 2005-10-29 05:28 pm (UTC)Actually, it reminds me of "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God", which was one of the things that led me away from Christianity.

...uh? I don't understand how a recordkeeping discrepancy accounts for 11 tribes' worth of people.

seidr parties for cash???? Is what they are claiming Hrafnar is doing, what are they talking about?

Date: 2005-10-30 01:06 am (UTC)Yngona is the one who just -- just now got the opportunity to study with a Saami family. I've met her, I've heard her speak, and I have no doubt whatsoever that she's the genuine article, doing genuine things. As far as I know, she returns that respect.
The thing is that eighteen, nineteen years ago, when the Hrafnar of the time was busy reinventing/reconstructing this work, there was no-one to learn from, especially not Saami to whom one could apprentice oneself!
We have never pretended that what we do is an exact recreation. I can tell you exactly the source of every piece of that ritual. There's no voodoo in it, although there's a couple pieces of Harner-style core shamanism to plug in holes in the material we had.
Anyone who swears there aren't any holes has probably not tried to work with what we've got -- I make exceptions for people like Bil Linzie, because, like Yngona, he's a genuine guy doing genuine work. If you ain't been in the pool, though, you got no right to bitch about the water or who's swimmin' in it.
To the specific charge of "seidh parties for cash", the demo seidhs that start each seidh workshop have been known to charge a door fee, this has only ever gone towards covering the cost of the hall.
But even if we charged $10/head for things at BFUU, which we don't, not charging for services rendered is a WICCANISM. I highly doubt that Thorbjorg found all that bling in a ditch by the roadside, you know?
You'd think that people who spend so much of their time jumping up and down screaming that we're so Wiccatru would at least know what they're screaming about.
Oh, wait, I forgot I was in this universe, where it's easier to scream from ignorance. My bad.

Caught your comment...
Date: 2005-10-30 07:32 pm (UTC)Hope this finds you well. I was browsing around for Wil on the Net and came upon this link (community/badheathens/) which referred to an article of his in Mountain Thunder, which I'm sure you know is hosted on vinland.org. I caught your reply in that thread, and I forwarded the links to Wil, so you might hear from him (or maybe not, as busy as he is). But he was glad to hear of your comment. :-)
We'll be out to the Bay area in January for the MacWorld Expo, so you might see us then. It would be nice to get together with everyone. Til then, take care!
