I still don't like to purl. I might have to do it everydamnedrow of a shawl, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. If I disliked it a little more, I would do shawls in garter stitch, but the look of a pattern like PotW/Old Shale has non-holey regions that would be much harmed by this, so I don't.
I take heart in the fact that EZ the Knit-Dís didn't like purl any better than I do, so also did it as little as possible.
Anyway, with a yarn over and a knit two together, you can do any easy lace pattern; the real signifier is how even your gauge is, and how much pattern can you hold in your head at a time.
